Student Statistics: ISSS welcomed 1534 new students fall semester 2007, bringing the total number of enrolled international students to 5288, an increase of 2.8% over last year’s total enrollment. Undergraduate enrollment increased by 9.0 percent and graduate enrollment increased by 0.1 percent from Fall 2006 to Fall 2007. Students from South Korea still represent the largest group of students with a total of 1,308. China posts the second largest enrollment of 950 students, followed by India with 645 students. The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is ranked #5 with 1988 students abroad. Study Abroad: in 2006-2007 approximately 2075 undergraduate students participated in study abroad in the following 64 countries: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Bahamas, Belgium, Benin, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Canada, Chile, China, Costa Rica, Croatia, Cuba, Czech Rep, Denmark, Dominican Rep, Ecuador, Egypt, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Jordan, Kenya, Korea, Latvia, Lithuania, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Nigeria, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Sao Tome, Senegal, Serbia, Singapore, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, U.K.-England, U.K.-Scotland, U.K.-Wales, UAE
Unique International Academic Programs : The University of Illinois remains among academia's elite in part because we understand that our relevance in the 21st century depends on growing the international dimension of our education mission. Illinois offers a variety of academic programs to help foster global competency. The flexibility and diversity of these programs allows students the potential to find a program that uniquely fits their needs. For instance the Global Studies Initiative now enrolls one-third of entering freshmen in an integrated series of general education courses focused on preparing undergraduates for the global environment that will frame their careers. Global Studies courses are part of a unique program that combines integrated curricula with internationally-prominent guest speakers, offering students 100-level courses encompassing religious studies, history, and English that have been restructured to focus on common themes in globalization. Winter break Global Studies courses in India and Austria, England, Mexico and Singapore, Ghana, the Galapagos Islands and Barcelona provide freshman with follow-up experiences studying global themes from their fall semester courses. The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) offers language programs in Paris, Vienna, Kobe, Barcelona, Granada, Padua and Costa Rica. International Programs in Engineering (IPENG) offers engineering students opportunities to develop intercultural sensitivity, understanding, and skills by studying or working abroad. IPENG summer programs are in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, China, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Kenya, Mexico, and Russia. In addition, the College of Engineering has exchanges programs with universities in France, Belgium, Germany, Japan, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. The School of Architecture offers a one-year FAA Architecture program in Versailles, France, which is open to qualified students. Course offerings parallel those available to students on this campus but stress the European context. The Hoeft Technology and Management Program bridges the gap between traditional engineering and business education by offering a unique curriculum to a select group of highly qualified undergraduates drawn from the Colleges of Engineering and Business. Working closely with its corporate partners, this program grooms the best and the brightest to be tomorrow's leaders in technology and business. The Center for International Business Education and Research (Illinois CIBER) is a center for advancing the study and teaching of international business and supporting research on global competitiveness. Illinois CIBER is committed to empowering students, faculty, and business professionals to meet the globalization challenge of the 21st century through high-quality teaching, research, and outreach programs that help advance their global knowledge and cross-cultural skills. Agricultural and Consumer Economics is one of the leading departments on campus in offering a wide variety of valuable international experiences. In addition to study abroad opportunities, recent work-study courses offered have included visits to Europe, South America, and New Zealand. These "international immersion" courses allow the student to gain first-hand knowledge and insights into how international markets work, how products are marketed throughout the supply channel, and how business cultures and practices vary across countries. |
